Atlanta, GA, November 30, 2009 – A directive adopted by the European Union (EU) to regulate the use of chemical substances sold into EU countries has no impact on the thousands of cable products manufactured each year by Superior Essex, the Company announced.
The SVHC list, which is periodically updated, includes 15 substances. The list in its entirety is found here.
“Superior Essex remains committed to producing products that are safe to handle and safe for the environment,” said Earl Scholtens, director of product market management, outside plant. “To this end, we will continue to monitor changes to the directive to ensure that future restrictions would have implications for our cable products.
The regulation, called Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), establishes a multi-year program to reduce the use of dangerous chemicals. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is responsible for managing the program and recommending inclusion of chemicals to the list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). These are chemical substances that have been judged to have potential negative effects on health or the environment.
